家族で田植え（たうえ）をしてきました。
My family and I went rice planting.
みなさん、田植えをしたことがありますか？

What Is Rice Planting?
日本人の主食（しゅしょく）はお米（こめ）です。
Rice is a staple food in Japan.
そのお米をつくるために、田んぼで稲（いね）を育てます。
To grow rice, we plant rice seedlings in a field called tanbo.
田んぼに稲をうえることを「田植え」と言います。
The act of planting rice in a paddy is called taue (rice planting).
Doing It by Hand
田植えは、ふつうは機械で行います。
Rice planting is usually done by machine.
でも今回は、昔のやり方で、手で田植えをしました。
But this time, we planted by hand, using the traditional way.
田んぼの中はどろどろで、足をぬくのも大へんでした。
The mud was thick and sticky—it was hard even to lift our feet!
Looking Forward to the Harvest
手で田植えをすると、いね一本一本がいとおしく思えます。
When you plant by hand, each rice plant feels special.
このいねたちは、１０月ごろにしゅうかくします。
These rice plants will be harvested around October.
その日が来るのが楽しみです。
We’re really looking forward to that day!
Final Thoughts
田植えはたいへんだけど、たのしくて学びが多い体けんでした。
Rice planting was hard, but fun and full of learning.
お米の大切さがよくわかりました。
I now better understand how precious rice is.
